Growing Collections

Authentic Roots' growing collection of storybooks teach and inspire children to grow their own food. The storybooks are designed to be educational and to engage children with every step of the growing process.

The storybooks can be incorporated into school curriculum's as the content of the storybooks lends themselves to a variety of topics, making them suitable for per-primary and primary schools. Each storybook has a planting calendar, educational questions and a fun maze.

The latest Read and Plant storybooks include the life cycle of a spinach plant as these books can also be used by schools to form part of Authentic Roots' food garden educational programme. The programme is based on sustainability and  teaches food recycling, planting, harvesting and sustainability.

Nature teaches us to have patience and gives us a deeper understanding of the connection between nature and human existence. Planting seeds and waiting for them to sprout and grow, cultivates patience and teaches us that the natural order of life cannot be forced nor rushed. Being outdoors, working with nature, is therapeutic and grounding and allows us to recharge.

Plantable Children's
Storybooks

Tommy the Tomato plantable storybook
Lily the Lettuce head plantable storybook

South Africa’s first plantable children's storybook are designed to be educational

Seeded paper is not new to South Africa, but Authentic Roots’ educational plantable children's storybooks are a first. These books connect children to the environment in a creative, mindful and educational way.

The covers of these books are handmade and embedded with non-GMO tomato or lettuce seeds, enabling children to plant the covers and nurture their plants.

A true South African collaboration. The author and creator, the illustrators and paper makers are all homegrown in South Africa. The author and owner of Authentic Roots, Tanya Van Rees, is passionate about nature, education, nutrition, well-being and caring for the environment and all sentient beings.

These books will not only make a positive impact on the lives of the children who get to experience it, but for each book sold, Authentic Roots will donate a meal to The Lunch Box Fund. They support vulnerable and food insecure school children by providing them with a daily meal, to help them get the education they need to build a life free from poverty.

Plantable Mother's Day Card with wildflowers

Plantable Mother's Day Card

These beautiful Mother's Day cards are handmade and embedded with beautiful wildflower seeds.

Both the front and the back of the card can be planted separately. Make Mother's Day special by not only writing a special message in this card, but by then planting and nurturing the card together for lasting, special moments when the wildflower seeds blossom.

The card is also part of Authentic Roots' plantable collection.
